Where's That Then? No 27

Sorry for delay. Leaves on the line, carriage taken out of service at Evercreech Junction, wrong kind of rain. But here's a sunlit evening to make up for it. Taken by G. Douglas Bolton AIBP, ARPS, FRSA, FRGS (alright, alright) for his book Presenting Britain, Oliver & Boyd 1957. Still raining, hope it turns out nice again.

    I went for the trams once, plus taking as long as possible to lose £1 of two penny pieces on the cascade machines in the arcades. It is an enjoyable (despite the inevitable outcome) way of throwing loose change away! My wife prefers the horse racing machines - I wish she had a system that worked!

    The trams really are the thing here, particularly the refurbished 1930's green and cream ones. I was surprised by Blackpool; that it appears to be a very large town in its own right, quite apart from the western seaside edge and its kiss me slowly delights. I just had to go there after seeing Funland with the very pleasing Sarah Smart.

    ...while shedding a tear for the demise of Boberts Oyster Rooms..now reduced to half its size and selling seafood in polystyrene pots for take-away only, while a pizza takeaway occupies the erstwhile other half of the premises. Sob. I still remember their crab cocktail; like a fishy nosebleed, washed down with hot tea; all served by a wizened taciturn old man in an apron.

    When Roberts', the wine shop that sold Yates's Crusted Port, the monumental Post Office and the tobaconist that kept Havanas all closed within a couple of years, that was Blackpool over for me. (Though you can still buy great Lancashire cheese, Chorley cakes, Savoury Duck and potted shrimps at the Central Market and there's a fabulously Unmitigated pub just next to Blackpool North station)

    Mmm, looks like a return visit is in order. Perhaps I should go around leaving Unmitigated Calling Cards under cafe tablecloths, under pub beer mats and under the leatherette of tram seats; shades of Lobby Lud and that other seaside newspaper promoter in Brighton Rock. Or just go there on the train and only go in that pub next to Blackpool North and then go home again.

    The fifth set of tram posts from the bottom (south) is where you check behind for the proximity of any trams that have merged into the road behind you. Or, in my case, it is also where my front bicycle wheel wedged itself in the tram track. Thus my understanding of the operations of the front end of a Balloon car (as viewed from the underside) is very intimate.

    Bikerted, if you mean the one with green turrets behind the monument, yes it is.

    The pub is the Ramsden Arms, 204 Talbot Road. Brewers Tudor outside; wood-panelling, wall-bench-seating, multi-rooms/snugs, old china, animal heads and photographs inside. Magic.
