A Good Friday
Solemn hymns, joyful hymns, flowers trumpeting on aisle window sills. The big door left open a little so that we can hear the growing lambs' Easter voices carried away on the wind from the hill. Churchyard daffodils nodding next to slate gravestones, but inside it's the smell of furniture polish, light filtering through old glass, the murmur of prayer. And the dull thump of the clock in the tower marking our hours. Happy Easter everybody.
On the downside, however, the whole of the UK shuts down for four days, making it impossible to get anyone out to do even the simplest of domestic appliance repairs.
ReplyDeleteSo, are we to assume that the staff of Britain's call centres, white goods insurance firms and all other hard workers are off attending religious services for a whole weekend? I think not; they are more likely, I would say, to be found propping up the bar in their local pub, while their colleagues jam up all the UK's motorways and major trunk roads in a mad rush for the seaside.
Mention 'Calvary' to most Brits and they'd probably think you were talking about soldiers on horseback in a John Wayne film.
Is Britain really still a Christian country? Well, maybe. And maybe, too, the Good Friday holiday (the word, remember, derives from 'holy' day) be reserved for those who genuinely wish to observe it. Worth a thought.
A joyful Easter to all....46 days of lent almost over...I can see my cadburys eggs dancing before me.

ReplyDeleteAs an atheist I have no reservations whatsoever in enjoying these days off - in fact I think think of them as workers holidays. That is, if you don't happen to work in the retail industry.
