Where's That Then? No 6
I think I'll have to give you a clue for this one, as there's a distinct lack of identifying features. All I'll say is that this car ferry doesn't run anymore. Well, not to my knowledge. But those trawlers might help. Anyway, an interesting collection of cars (and hats) and something there for luggage afficianados. What I find interesting is that car manufacturers in the forties and fifties didn't exactly give you much boot space. Probably thought we wouldn't be going very far.
slight air of The North Sea about this one to me - Humber Estury ?
ReplyDeleteor ESTUARY even !!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteEasy! If you zoom in, you can read the ship's name and home port on the lifebelt. Hence, presumably somewhere in the Humber.
ReplyDeleteThis ship served one of the few British Rail stations never to have trains, or, indeed, railway lines: Hull Corporation Pier station. It was also, by the 1980s, probably the largest coal-fired thing that British Rail still owned (they did still have a handful of steam locos, in Wales). I can remember seeing it in the early 80s, when it spent about 5 years beached on the Lincolnshire side of the Humber just west of the bridge.
(I should also have added more exciting details - having heavily researched the LNER for a TV quiz show recently - but sadly, I've forgotten exactly when and where the ship was built. They did, though, also build a similar but rather more interesting and esoteric ship: MV Talisman, the world's only diesel-electric paddle powered vessel. As far as I'm aware, of course)
ReplyDeleteThankyou all, interesting stuff. Somewhere I have a ferry ticket to New Holland. And of course yes, Diplo is this week's winner
ReplyDeleteIan's father remembers using this ferry on occasions. On one side, maybe both, the cars had to be put into position by a crane. As far as Ian recalls the landing pier is still at New Holland.
ReplyDeleteCurse that diplo...foiled again.
ReplyDeleteto be fair I didn't recognise the waves or the view over the stern, the Lincoln Castle sort of gave the game away really - I recall its demise being heralded on Blue Peter or similar. And of course the luggage- marvelous. It was obviously in the full knowledge that the luggage capacity was insufficient to cope with family holidays that manufacturers very thoughtfully came up a huge range of ingenious devices to allow "flexible" storage capacity - rather well demonstrated here.
ReplyDeleteI never made it to the Humber...but my dad had a Humber Hawk with a walnut interior
ReplyDeleteAh. Humbers on the Humber. Marshalls in Hull has a collection of Humbers, all in silver and black I think, that are great favourites in the local wedding hire business.
ReplyDeleteNice answers in return of this difficulty with genuine arguments and explaining everything about that.
