The Size of Eggs in Warwickshire

Another collection started today. The sheer variety of local signs advertising fresh eggs makes an interesting I-Spy game whilst out on country roads. Well, that's my excuse anyway. It could be a piece of recycled wood knocked out from the back of a wardrobe with not enough space left on it for the 's' of 'eggs', or the remarkably enigmatic 'Bull's Eggs' found out on an Essex coast road, as seen in Cross Country. Local vernacular commercial art. Here's a lovely jolly example on a road leading into Wilmcote near Stratford-on-Avon. Note the wheels for running it indoors at night. And yes, I did call in for half-a-dozen, and a quartet of duck eggs for good measure.

  1. You will be unsurprised to learn that I'm wondering if there could be an enormous chicken wandering around somewhere in Warwickshire.

As far as road signs on our country lanes is concerned, may I draw your attention to the song Asparagus Next Left by Half Man Half Biscuit:

  3. Ah. An egg from Shakespeare's country. As eaten by Omlet, Prince of Denmark perhaps.

  4. My favourites are the white hand painted letters on black painted sheet of tin or plywood, (same technique as for a number plate on a farm trailer). Some items can only ever have four or five letters though, whilst others get the whole spelling:

    EGGS
    TOMS
    POTS
    CUCUMBER
    STRAW (berries or bale?)
    RASPS
    LETTUCE
    PUMPKINS

  5. Thankyou for all this, brilliant. On the cooking of eggs I can also thoroughly recommend A.A.Gill's Breakfast at The Wolseley.

  6. There's a sign for Asparagus near us which promises a short drive to its source - 3 miles later and getting lost twice we arrived to find they'd sold out.

EggFree living? Well I certainly don't "know a lot of folks who don’t eat eggs (they’re allergic, for health reasons, or concerns about animal cruelty)"...ever since the government ruled that it was ok to eat more eggs they have become my daily ritual and they're lovely. I do tend to buy free range because they taste better.

Mind you I was in a sports equipment shop in Brighton some while ago (no don't ask why) when a woman came in seeking thermal underwear (now you know why!) and said..."I don't want silk because of the inherent cruelty to silkworms..." that's Brighton for you.

  8. peter - i always rather aproved of Mr Bond's specification for scrambled eggs that uses the best part of 1/2 lb of butter for a dozen eggs - MORE ANIMAL FAT !

  9. Farmer's own signs: Round here asparagus is advertised on boards by farm gates as 'FRESH LOCAL GRASS'. There's also a farmer not far from here whose sign promises 'GOOD FRESH HORSE MUCK'. They're not here to mess about...

  10. Interestingly (or not as the case may be) there is none of that verge-side marketing here in Italy, with eggs or spuds on offer direct from the producer. Perhaps because a lot of people still grow their own here. Or maybe because they can't be arsed. That sounds more like it.

  11. Ah Diplo, your comment about Bond and eggs brings to mind Michael Caine breaking two eggs into a bowl with one hand in The Ipcress File. Except he couldn't do it, so Len Deighton, who happened to be on set, did it instead. Mr Deighton very good on eggs in his Action Cook Book, and on ouefs in Ou est le Garlic.

  13. Further to your Len Deighton Ipcress recollection Peter, at least one of the newspaper cuttings seen pinned up in that kitchen scene is one of yer actual 'cookstrips' made by Mr Deighton for The Observer.

  14. Well spotted Office Pest. And even smarter is the fact that more Cookstrips are pinned up as the film progresses. A bit like the emptying Newcastle Brown bottles on Alan Price's piano in the musical interludes to Lindsay Anderson's stunning O Lucky Man!.
