On The Road Again


Back in the mists of time, well, 2009 to be precise, I drew attention to the paucity of design and marketing skills that had gone into the replacement Walls Ice Cream 'identity'. Never again, I thought, would we see the bountiful blue swirling letters on a cream background, still doing their job on a fine summer's day. Imagine my joy then, to come up behind this on the road between Caldecott and Uppingham in Rutland. Any minute now, I thought, a Foden petrol tanker will come the other way with 'Regent' on the side.

    I think Wall's is owned by Unilever. Their Italian equivalent (same logo) is called Algida which sounds rather like a swimming pool disinfectant.

    You're right, Ron. Unilever owns a host of brands (Algida, Frigo, Eskimo...) that have been allocated the swirly heart symbol. I bought a box of Magnums the other day that had the symbol on and for some reason felt the need to look it up, to find that Unilever is indeed the culprit. How refreshing to see the van with the old Wall's lettering though. Now I just need some Italian ice cream...

    Remember when your mum sent you out to buy a 'brick of Walls Neapolitan ice cream? The lady in our local shop would conscientiously wrap it in several sheets of newspaper (probably The News Chronicle) in order that it should not have completely melted before you got it home. Good for the man with the ice cream van to preserve the typographic memory and good for you not putting the car in the ditch whilst you snapped his rear end. Maybe it was the retired Tommy Walls from 'The Eagle' comic of blesséd memory. Oh no, I feel a Frank Hampson moment coming on...

    Wonderful photo that brings back feelings of nostalgia. Actually, as a child I always thought it was Wallis ice cream. The rules of apostrophes were unknown to me then!
