Last Friday night saw us in Cirencester, at a private view for another exhibition of the work of Tony Meeuwissen. I've gone on about Tony's work before, but at the Corinium Museum was another chance to see it again. I can only say you must try and see it. It's only on until the end of October, but there may be other opportunities. I can't remember the last time my jaw literally dropped open at the sight of such incredible design and illustration, unless it was when I saw his exhibition in Stroud last year. The two playing cards above will give you a hint as to what's in store; they're from his deck of cards The Key To The Kingdom. There are beautiful signed prints available too, and whilst I'm in recommending mood, if you need a good hotel in the town then give The Fleece a go. What a lot of links, but it's worth it.

Brilliant, thanks Peter. I went straight to Amazon and bought a Key to the Kingdom..
Exquisite, simply exquisite - would that us mere mortals had one percent of his talents. Thank you for once more reminding us of this work - somewhere I've got a book of Russian puzzles the cover of which is illustrated by TM. Bloody marvellous!
Thank you for featuring a marvellous English building on the six of diamonds. I'm going to find it hard to resist a trip to Cirencester on Saturday.
Thankyou you three, you've warmed the cockles of my heart. You won't regret your purchase Vincent, that I can promise you. Jon: The illustration you speak of was for The Moscow Puzzles, and lo! that's one of the signed prints he's doing. Wilko: Get on down there, you know it makes sense. These are two of my favourite cards from the pack, but it was very hard to choose.
Another fan of Tony here!
I'm heading off to Ciren at the weekend to view the exhibition, as I saw last year's in Stroud and like you was totally knocked out; I only wish I was flush enough to buy one of Tony's originals; although I did buy one of his prints, which he kindly signed and now hangs in my daughter's bedroom.
Coincidently, I blogged about Tony's Woodbine inspired booked cover for Billy Liar a week or so ago.
You'll have been on the Hooky then?
Sorry Ron, Donnington's BB.
Vintage K: I've left a note on your blog (isn't this good, like leaving bits of paper on each other's kitchen tables) to the effect that you will see, at the Cirencester exhibition, that Tony M has made a cigarette pack out of the Billy Liar book cover. Full circle, amazing.
Tony Meeuwissen...Wow...Ive been a fan since art school in fact I wrote him a letter and got a reply written in a .0000001 rapidograph..he suggested that I go to Wolff Olins ...where I believe you used to work.
Ive still got that letter kept in my signed copy of "The Witches hat" dated 2nd May 1976...that said ...I just wanted you to know that I still am an ardent watcher and checkerouterer of Unmitigated England...Dowdy
I think The Key to the Kingdom is going on my Amazon wishlist! Great illustrations.
small world eh ?
Oh Dowdy, so glad you're still out there down under.
