Where's That Then No 13

A few years ago I turned up here early on a hot summer's evening. Folk were cooking suppers on boats, and the strains of the Archer's signature tune came over the still water. In fact it was very like this 1958 scene, except the boats were more fibreglass and plastic than wood. But the little drainage mill was there, spreading its sails like filigree wings against a deep blue sky. So, where is it, and for extra toast the names of the two rivers that join here.

Beautiful skies beautiful Fenland, the Broads...Turf Fen maybe?

Have to narrow you down there Jon. But you're in the right kind of area, certainly east.

blimey - that's got to be a Broads windmill, the only one I really know is Berney Arms and it's not that - I remember lots of pumpmills that were very twiggy looking things and it's not them either. It'sthe boat that has me in the Broads but I'm stumped.

Broads it is, but just a bit more focus and you'll be there. It's quite a famous landmark, and I photographed it after snapping St.Benet's, which has a windmill built into its gatehouse ruins. And that's not very far away.

I think I may have to bow out gracefully - I've used your clue re the rivers joining and rummaged the old google map - clear as a bell but cheating is cheating so i'll leave it there, great looking spot though.

Me too...no Googling!

Hmmm... I removed my comment because I'd found it using google maps (although that was before the St Benets clue - in fact, about 8.10am.)

Might have to redeem myself by driving out there to have a look - seeing as the suns come out.

(That's assuming I got it right. Well, I might drive there anyway.)

Go for it Potterboy. What a treat, to gaze on this mill on a cold sunny Norfolk morning.

Isn't that at Thurne, at the junction of the Rivers Thurne and Bure?
I used to go on an Easter cruise for young lads in a boat just like that. Golly it got cold some mornings...

Well done ChrisP. It is indeed Thurne drainage mill. Other mills exist like this, but as far as I know Thurne is only one with a little extension added to the top of the original structure. And of course extra toast for naming the rivers. Perfect, evocative names I think.
