I do hope regular readers aren't getting too tired of Unmitigated England being an Unmitigated Quiz at present. But just think about it as leaving the central heating on low so that the house doesn't freeze up. The New Year (I've just decided) will be the start of all the usual things you've come to expect and been deprived of: corrugated iron, fag packets, Vimto bottles etc. With a Christmas Special of course. In the meantime, how about this?
That's actually the Royal Observatory so I guess W and E have it - sort of. I'm shocked to see the bloody anti-pigeon netting has got out of hand again. My campaign to rid our built environment of this menace is under way as I write.
Knowing the place quite well I thought - I'm sure there's a bloody great sign on the wall saying "Royal Observatory Greenwich" - clever Peter's been at the photosop - upon closer inspection I see he hasn't at all- the sign is indeed there.

You know a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally would want to…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject that's been written about for decades. Wonderful stuff, just wonderful!
I am a designer, writer and photographer who spends all his time looking at England, particularly buildings and the countryside. But I have a leaning towards the slightly odd and neglected, the unsung elements that make England such an interesting place to live in. I am the author and photographer of over 25 books, in particular Unmitigated England (Adelphi 2006), More from Unmitigated England (Adelphi 2007), Cross Country (Wiley 2011), The Cigarette Papers (Frances Lincoln 2012), Preposterous Erections (Frances Lincoln 2012) and English Allsorts (Adelphi 2015)
"Open this book with reverence. It is a hymn to England". Clive Aslet
Preposterous Erections
"Enchanting...delightful". The Bookseller "Cheekily named" We Love This Book
The Cigarette Papers
"Unexpectedly pleasing and engrossing...beautifully illustrated". The Bookseller
Cross Country
"Until the happy advent of Peter Ashley's Cross Country it has, ironically, been foreigners who have been best at celebrating Englishness". Christina Hardyment / The Independent
More from Unmitigated England
"Give this book to someone you know- if not everyone you know." Simon Heffer, Country Life. "When it comes to spotting the small but telling details of Englishness, Peter Ashley has no equal." Michael Prodger, Sunday Telegraph

On top the dome looks like an observatory, plus the ship at the very top leads me to think of Greenwich, but somewhere behind the main observatory?

Love the weather vane.
Well done Williamandemma. It is indeed the Victorian observatory at Greenwich. Not as classy as the one on the top of the hill though.
Look forward to UE resurgent!
Please keep going, Peter.
May I second (or third) that? We need corrugated iron, traditional lettering, and pleasing decay (whether in paintwork or in cheese).
