Where's That Then? No 23

Funny old place this. Not very Unmitigated, for all its honey-coloured architecture and sweeping greenery (no ball games). Perhaps it's all a little too self conscious, like a beautiful old lady who's had a lifetime of everyone gawping at her and saying how beautiful she is, but actually looking a little askance at all the attention from complete strangers. I was one of many strangers here early on a bright April morning, thankful to find a bacon sandwich after one 'cafe' had met my request as if I'd just gone in there and dropped my trousers amongst the cake stands.

Broadway! I once bought a nice pair of brown Grenson brogues there in the 70's, alas it's nought but a mecca for American and Japanese tourists. I was once declined afternoon tea at The Lygon Arms, said they didn't serve it... didn't look rich enough more like!

Well done that Lemon Kelly! Broadway 'tis. The Lygon Arms was one of two buildings I snapped, plus an arts 'n' crafty gazebo up Fish Hill. Er that's it. Except the fabulous tower of course.

Indeed. What an idea our American and Japanese cousins must have of England from this place. Thankfully quite a few of them also visit more down to earth Cotswold places like Chipping Campden and Winchcombe. Broadway has a kind of bypass now, and signpost through traffic miles round. I always drive through the middle, not to gawp at the scissor-cut lawns but just because it's quicker.

I have a particular dislike for the very American 'Good Humor Man' often seen peddling or even pedalling ersatz ice cream from bicycle driven carts, whilst sporting some garish costume! It is however a very beautiful village with gloriously beautiful houses. But there is a very high price to pay for such abject commercialism. I have on many occasions searched there in vain for a butcher in pursuit of an unmitigated pork pie; maybe one exists but all I have ever found was wretched 'craft shops' and dire tea rooms. Oh dear, I am turning very grumpy in my advancing years.

There's a good butcher, Pilcher and Newman, in Winchcombe, a place that also has a good deli and a decent veg shop, if you can go a few miles further south.

Thanks for the advice, I currently live in Martock South Somerset, but have been know to travel far & wide in search of a decent butcher capable of producing good pies and sausages!

This is very interesting, the abject commercialisation of England in some places but not others. I heartily agree with Wilko over Chipping Campden and Winchcombe. Slow walks round both bring Unmitigated Rewards.

Being ‘Glarstershire’ born and bred, I much prefer the grey limestone buildings of the Stroud area, rather than the north Cotswold honey coloured ones. I think it’s a shame that many Cotswold buildings have been completely renovated and look too sanitised, devoid of any of any original character. Urgh – chocolate box! Give me a tatty, peeling paint sash windowed cottage (preferably with working thunderbox) any day!

There's a similar dichotomy in Somerset with the blue lias, which confusingly is grey, of the northern reaches, and the hamstone of the southern.

sorry to miss this one - great light bringing out the colour of the stone - marvelous stuff - carry on

Hats off to the Vintage Knitter for that appreciation of the buildings of the valleys around Stroud. Wonderful, characterful, unsung places.

Thank you, Mr. Wilkinson.

Ahh, Lemon Kelly, glad to know just where the American Good Humor man went...because in America, the Good Humor man is not only NOT American, he doesn't even speak English (Yankee version of course) or sell American treats!
